Supernatural: Split Decision

The Winchesters head to jailWe’ve got a split decision on this episode here at CW Source Central. The majority loved it – it was light, it was snarky, it had a creepy ghost and lots of brotherly banter. But a vocal minority thought the episode just didn’t quite gel – yeah, the elements were there, but they didn’t hang together. What do you think? Need to refresh your memory? Read a full recap!

Here’s the stuff we all agree on: The brotherly interaction blew us away. Dean was in full-on snarktastic mode, and Sam kept trying to remind him that, dude, we’re in JAIL, and that’s BAD. Which was your favorite Dean snarky moment? The guys just played off each other so well, and we love the way they work together. Plus, Sam and Dean revisited some of the themes that have served them so well over the past couple of seasons: Loyalty, paying off debts, Dean being determined to honor his father’s presumed will while Sam was less sure about it all.

We all liked the various fake-outs in this episode – did any of you guess that the mean, abusive guard was actually they guys’ contact on the inside? That took us by surprise. Deacon did far too convincing a job at being a bad guy. Plus, who would have guessed that the vengeful ghost wasn’t an expired psycho killer, but was instead a former nurse?

Finally, we all loved the guest actors in this episode. We applauded the return of Agent Hendrickson – he’s a great foil for the boys, and his mere presence was almost – almost – enough to wipe that smirk off Dean’s face. The various bad-ass cons were perfectly done – we loved poor doomed Tiny, with his self-esteem issues. And who would have thought that they’d be able to find a guest actor even taller than Sam? Plus, the guys’ feisty lawyer did a great job fending off Hendrickson – she might be someone we’d like to see again.

But that kind of gets us to the part that some of us aren’t so sure about.

The show did such a fantastic job building the sense of menace, the “we’re so screwed” attitude, in Night Shifter, that it was sort of jarring to have Dean, especially, acting so cavalier about potential consequences. Agent Hendrickson isn’t just a pretty face – he’s a competent agent who’s obsessed with bringing the boys down. Last time, the guys got that. This time, they sort of ignored that fact. It didn’t ring true for some of us.

And while we all liked the guys’ lawyer, her sudden conversion to the guys’ cause, with no real evidence other than some weird facts and Dean looking deep into her eyes and telling her they were on the side of the angels, didn’t quite sit right with some of us. Granted, the guys rocked their prison jumpsuits, and Dean was quite sincere when he talked to her, but would that really be enough for a seasoned attorney to risk her law license and lie to the Feds? We weren’t sure. And perhaps we’re paranoid, but we couldn’t help but think maybe her participation in this wasn’t accidental – is she part of some sort of demonic plot? Or did she just genuinely believe in the boys?

So what did you think? Do you love it, hate it, or think it sort of missed the mark? Did the ghost scare you sufficiently? Were you fooled by Deacon’s bad-guard act? Do you buy that Hendrickson would let the guys slip through his fingers again? And how obsessed with he be with catching the Winchester boys now that they’ve eluded him twice? Discuss!

Great one!I love seeing the boys in trouble with the cops, love the action - Hendriksen was great again - and I believe that lawyer was sort of Deacon's friend, you know, part of the plan. After all,Dean's hot,but there are limits!
And talking about hot,Sam and Dean wearing the prison uniform were a sight for sore eyes!

SN rocks! It's the right mix of comedy, suspense, and just plain AWSOME scripts. There's no way for there not to be a 3rd season. I can't wait for tonight's ep...or Smallville's:)

I really enjoyed this episode! It had everything that I love about Supernatural and more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This ep was great. My fave line.. "Doesn't seem odd how you fit in here?"-Sam

"No, not really."-Dean

And Dean's face when he had to give up another pack of ciggarettes classic. "I earned these." Heh this was great and FBI aren't the know all and end all they're falluable humans I think the fact that they let them slip through thier fingers proves just how messed up our system can be it happens all the time.

Kelly: considering the brothers previous disappearance acts, it would have been careless for the police to place Sam & Dean in the same cell. But I hear what you're saying.

Rahel: FBI plot: This hasn't been an overlydone or indepth side story. At least the writers are addressing and incorporating this into the plot. Think about how many crimes these guys have committed: credit card fraud, numerous grave desecrations, numerous B&Es. They're also linked to murders. Are you saying that it would be believable if the law never caught up with the Winchesters?

The writing team is doing just fine in this area and incorporating the FBI where necessary. Dean's face is shown on TV in a hostage situation, therefore FBI shows up. Dean and Sam purposely get arrested to hunt a spirit in a prison, therefore the FBI shows up. It's not as if the writers have scrapped, lost, or overwhelmed the Supernatural element of the program with the FBI factors during FPB and Nightshifter. Unlike Hollywood Babylon when the Supernatural element (and brotherly bond) was overwhelmed by all the jokes.

Nice to see I'm not the only one not digging the FBI plot.
But what's really important is why they wrote a prison episode and put Sam and Dean into separate cells!!??!!
That's criminal!!!

I love to watch america's next top model it nice that some of the girls really speak up for themselves.

I love to watch america's next top model it nice that some of the girls really speak up for themselves.

Yeah, the end was lame. It was like the end of nightshifter but weaker.
The episode was ok. I only hope the whole FBI storyline will be dropped. This is Supernatural, not Law&Order.
And please tell me that the most boring character ever, aka the lawyer, will never appear again!

Just when I think this show can't get any better, it does!
I loved this episode and thought it was so well-written. Especially the way Sam was nervous about Dean's plan and yet went along with it anyway because he's loyal to Dean and respects him; and how Dean was protective of Sam yet determined to stop evil wherever he found it. And cocky with it!
The contrast in the brothers' approach to the job coupled with their palpable mutual bond is completely enthralling, and this episode gave us another twist of that.
The nurse was dead scary too.
I'm telling everyone I know to watch this show - it rocks!

(Do you buy that Hendrickson would let the guys slip through his fingers again?)I do,either the guys are really, really, good at what they do OR Hendrickson is really bad at his job.(lol)but i LOVED the episode.

i loved this episode. but i cant wait for "All hell breaks loose part 1" damn only two weeks away. but i really want to watch the episode for next week.

I loved this episdoe and through the whole thing i was never bored! I love the way both boys played thier parts so well, with Dean acting like it was all good, and Sam with being all serious. And i totally got how dean was being all "relaxed" he said that it was a for sure thing so i get it, and i think that the laywere lying was great and beliveable becasue she just knew that she shouldn't screw the boys over. so all in all i love this episode and i thought it was awsome

and next week looks great

i hope that it comes back for a thrid season! i bet it will kick ass!!!

Well, the episode was very entertaining. It was.

However, it is a Shiban episode, which means it requires a lot of hand-waving and a suspension of disbelief. He was never the best writer when it came down to details. In my opinion, when he writes it'll either be a hit or a miss. This was a hit for him.

The fact that the episode entertained me was a great thing for him to accomplish. His previous episodes this season have been kind of blah.

Sure, there are numerous things to nitpick and, when analyzed too closely, the plot may not hold up. At least he managed to make those 40 something minutes very amusing.

I loved the eppy!

I loved this episode. It has everything people have commented on above. As for the cavalier attitude about Hendrickson finding them. Hendrickson mentioned that he went nuts trying to find them last time because the boys knew how to disappear. I took that to mean that the boys can do it again, which is why it didn't really affect them at the end, which is where the Yemen comment came in. That's just my opinion though. Anyways, great humor, suspense, and ghost storyline.

I really enjoyed this episode - it had it all humor, drama, suspense, action and that bit of character development that makes SN so great!!! I was also uber creeped out at the beginning of the episode, and everytime the nurse's spirit showed up...she definately was one of the creepier MOTW for me!!!

Loved Dean's lines while taking his mug shots and the look on his face when Mara asked if he was Dean (not to mention that 'In the flesh line'...) was so classic Dean. Oh, and I call dibs on being the keeper of Poker!Dean!!! Also loved how Dean wouldn't let anyone pick on Sam and Dean's compassion towards the inmates and his loyalty and sense of duty...just when I thought I couldn't fall in love with him anymore...

I, too, felt badly for Sam; he was NOT happy with the plan to begin with and Henriksen showing up definately further soured him on that point. Still he did a great job getting information out of Randal and I too loved that 'because I've got and idiot for a brother line'....awwww, we all know how much the love each other!!! I also liked how his first priority was making sure they got out of prison, whatever the result of their hunt - it was the perfect balance to Dean's passion for hunting evil, which was fueled further by his with to pay the debt he feels he owes to Deacon.

On the subject of Henricksen, let me just say I hate that guy...but in a good way: Henricksen is turning out to be the character I love to hate. I loved watching his interaction with Dean at the beginning and thought that the actor who played him and JA played off each other very well! That being said, I'm really looking forward to seeing him get taken down a peg or two!

Can't wait for next week's episode - the promo looks awesome!

Wooo! Hoooo! What a truly awesome episode. The boys were the boys I fell for in season 1. Dean was snarky and badass, Sam cutely cranky but with very good reason. (See writers if you give him a good reason for the bitchface instead of just making him gratuitously bitchy, it doesn't bother me at all.)

The plot was twisty enough to keep me guessing and the ghost was kinda freaky. The guest stars were all fabulous. Hendrickson is a kickass nemesis for the boys and yes Dean you are adorable!

I don't think the lawyer knew John. I think she lied just as much because she just plain didn't like Hendrickson. lol. But, yeah, her lying for them? Not too believable. She didn't have to say anything at all to Hendrickson, though. He wouldn't have been able to prove anything against her. So, having her lie to him was really stupid but they wanted to set up the so-called cemetery fake-out. But who here didn't know that the FBI team was at a different cemetery?

Anyway, I don't know where the "she's part of a demon plot" comes from (as mentioned in the original blog post). lol. Does everyone have to tie *everything* to the density storyline? Because I sure don't want everything tied to that. I relish these episodes that don't touch on it at all.

This episode was so funny!!!
It was so cute in Dean's mug shot when he said "I call this Blue Steel"-so funny. The orange jump suite were super hot!!!!
Dean was so great in this episode, all his little fight scenes were so hotttttt!!!!
Personally I think the lawyer and Hendrickson are both evil demons, I mean can Sam and Dean really trust just anybody anymore?
Next weeks episode seems just as good as this weeks:)!!!!!

I'm into the whole FBI storyline. With all the crimes these guys commit, it has to come back to bite them in the ass. Without the law "hunting" Dean & Sam down, there would be a hole in the plot. Hendrickson was a small part of this episode and didn't deter focus from the ghost they guys were hunting.

Do we buy that Hendrickson would let the guys slip through his fingers again? Yes. They’re setting up for this story line to be continued in season 3. Dean and Sam are professionally trained, intelligent, sneaky and clever. How was Hendrickson to know they had someone working on the inside that would help them to escape? After they had, yes, he was thinking “inside job”.

On another note:
deb: Dean talked to both the lawyer and Hendrickson because he has more pending charges against him and has got to be higher up on the FBI's wanted list than Sam. It makes sense.

Why assume the public defender is a potential love interest? For all we know she could be a demon.

Sam not kicking ass? He was in jail, uncomfortable, out of place and frightened. Hello...

Geez..go away from the arc which is more Sam based and create a side plot in regards to Dean and someone freaks. Are you a fan of Sam/Jared or a fan of Supernatural? Stay calm, sweetie. You shall be happier when All Hell Breaks Loose airs. From what I've read it should be more Sam based.

Hey everyone: Don’t forget the comic book Supernatural Origins #1 goes on sale this Wednesday. Even though I'm not into comics, I’m interested in the back story of John becoming a hunter.

okay, the lawyer...I think she knew Papa John!

I liked this episode. I didn't necessarily think Dean was being "cavalier" about being in jail. They were in there on their terms. They had an inside contact and they had a way out. He was confident that Deacon could get them out and he was focused on the job. Although, he behaved similarly when they were arrested in "The Usual Suspects" but, again, he was focused on doing the job. Saving lives was more important to him at the time. But, I think he'd behave a little differently if he didn't have a job to focus on and/or he was really looking at hard time and/or the death penalty. Of course, I think he'd still be "Dean". I think he takes what he's dealt and makes the best of it. He's been doing it his whole life.

I felt like he was more like the season 1 Dean that I fell in love with. He truly believed that they needed to get rid of this ghost, not only to pay back a debt for his father, but to also save people he didn't feel deserved to die.

Much of this season has had Dean throwing himself into the job from grief and/or anger or they've been painting him as quite indifferent to the cases and just wanting to get the job done. It hasn't felt like he's really been in it because he really believes in it for a while to me. So, I really loved this episode for that. I loved his snark. I like how he adapts to any situation. He must have had plenty of practice growing up and moving around all of the time.

This episode didn't bowl me over necessarily but I think it was good overall. Last week's had the humor kind of overwhelming the supernatural aspect for me. I didn't like the victims enough, because they were part of the jokes, and I didn't dislike the bad guy enough to relish in his being torn into by 3 ghosts. Not that he didn't deserve it, since he was the one having people killed but it just fell flat for me because of all the funny stuff in the episode. Plus, the resolution was very anti-climactic with Sam running to take care of the bad guy, followed by Dean and that other guy rushing in, only to have all three just stand there and watch the guy die. I'm not saying that they should have done anything but it sure didn't make for a very exciting ending. Not that all of them need to be exciting but that was just like, "that's it?" for me. lol. Anyway, that one I liked in some ways but the supernatural part really suffered for me, due to the humor of the episode.

This one did not. I think there was a good balance and I liked this was overall.

Not one of the best episodes.
Sam took a back seat again and it was a huge Dean fest.
What's up with Sam not shooting or kicking asses all of a sudden?
Dean talked to the agent, Dean talked to the lawyer, Dean faced the monster.
It's a show about two brothers, we can't have all Dean centric episodes.

Also the whole FBI thing is lame and boring, it was ok the first time but now it's just the same thing over again.
And the supposed sexy smart sassy lawyer?
Pleeeease! Do we really need another love interest in training?

And most of all, do we need all these people that have nothing to do with the supernatural or the boys' history and relationship?
The answer is a big NO.

I love this episode! It was scary, funny, intense...just overall amazing! Dean had some pretty hillarious lines, and poor Sam looked like a lost puppy the whole episode! One of my favorite scenes in the episode was Sam's face when he first saw his roomie. His "Oh my God, he's more ginormous than me" look was priceless! I also loved when Hendrickson showed up while Dean was being held in the police station. You could almost hear the "Oh, crap" running through his head.

Other favorite moments:
Sam: "Cuz I got an idiot for a brother"

Dean: "Man, I am velvety smooth."
Sam: "You wanna maybe open that, you know, when you're done patting yourself on the back?" (or whatever Sam says...it was something like that)

And, of course, Dean taking his mug shot.

Also, I think that the fact the boys weren't all that worried about being in jail was perfectly in character. We all know that Dean can be pretty (okay, well, really) cocky at times. In this case, he was 100% positive that he and Sam were getting out of jail and that absolutely nothing would stop them. Because of this, Dean wasn't at all worried, and Sam, who completely trusts his brother, was only a little bit worried. Plus, as jas pointed out, in Nightshifter, they didn't have any plan and were basically focused on staying alive and not getting arrested for the next minute as opposed to the previously planned escape in FPB.

Anyway, I love this episode. Definitely goes in my top favorites for this season (and man, is that list getting long).

Also, the previews of the next episode almost made me cry. Can't wait until the actual episode. Bring on the tissues!

I loved this episode. And i love orange jumpsuits. WOW!!

Sarah's quote: "The show did such a fantastic job building the sense of menace, the "we're so screwed"? attitude, in Night Shifter, that it was sort of jarring to have Dean, especially, acting so cavalier about potential consequences. Agent Hendrickson isn't just a pretty face he's a competent agent who's obsessed with bringing the boys down. Last time, the guys got that. This time, they sort of ignored that fact. It didn't ring true for some of us."

Maybe this will give you more perspecive on the above:

Nightshifter: Hendrickson came on as a surprise. Also, Dean and Sam had to come up with a spur of the moment "way out" of the situation that escalated into a SWAT team scenario.

FPB: This time Dean knew Hendrickson would show up. He said so in the episode (although not as soon as he expected). Even so, it didn't matter to Dean because: this time they already had a planned "out" via an old friend who was one of the prison guards. Dean didn't think they would be there long enough for Hendrickson to have the extradition go through. This getting arrested/placed in jail bad situation was cleverly devised with a planned escape.

The other inmates were scarier than Hendrickson. Sam's expressions confirmed this. The guys had more to think about than Hendrickson. They had to watch their backs, and hope they didn't become another inmate's...uh...I think you get my point. Besides, how could Hendrickson insill "fear of prison" into the guys when they already were behind bars?

I'm beginning to ramble.

In a nutshell. This episode was FANTASTIC....I love, love, loved it. Back to threads, bringing prior events into the episode.

Well, my lunch is over...got to get back to work.
