Clouds are thickening Friday night with snow and sleet developing near the state line. The first weather system of the weekend will bring a round of snow / sleet and even some rain into Saturday morning. There may be some slick spots early Saturday but this system should depart quickly allowing for improving conditions throughout the day. A break will develop Saturday but it will be short as the second system will send its first round of precip into the area by Sunday morning. Temperatures late Saturday night and early Sunday will settle at or just below the freezing mark - with drizzle and light rain coming in early Sunday morning there is a possibility that icy conditions will develop. The threat for freezing drizzle/rain will diminish later Sunday morning as temperatures climb above the freezing mark.
WEEKEND STORM #2
The current storm tracks favor heavy snowfall in excess of 8" targeting north central Illinois and far northwest Indiana. The center of the storm will lift into central Indiana Monday morning. Precipitation will break out ahead of the low and carry rain into central Indiana late Sunday night into Monday morning. Temperatures may struggle to stay above the freezing mark Sunday night and create a period of icing that could last into Monday morning. The recent snow pack will also create heavy fog Monday morning. Warmer air drawn north by the system will hit the surface snow pack and create a temperatures inversion - colder air at the surface trapped below layer of warmer air. This is a prime set up for freezing rain and fog. Travel may be slick Sunday night and early Monday. The temperatures are expected to climb above the freezing mark Monday afternoon with drier air cutting off the rain.
Colder air will wrap into the storm Monday night. Light rain will transition to light snow/snow showers overnight Monday into Tuesday as the storm Departs.
PART 3 - LATE SEASON ARCTIC AIR ON THE MOVE
Accumulating snow is possible Tuesday night and Wednesday as late season arctic air dives into the eastern U.S. Temperatures are expected to run some 20 degrees below normal.
LOOK OUT FOR FALLING ICICLES!
Here is what looms above my garage door - I think its time to take them down!
